2.4 Rights of Trade Unions and Employers’ Organisations
Trade unions and employers’ organisations have specific rights under the Labour Relations Act. Every trade union and every employers’ organisation has the right to determine its own constitution and rules, and to hold elections for its office-bearers, officials, and representatives. This autonomy allows these organisations to manage their internal affairs independently.
They also have the right to plan and organise their administration and lawful activities, and to participate in forming or joining federations of trade unions or employers’ organisations. Additionally, they have the right to affiliate with, and participate in the affairs of, any international workers’ or employers’ organisation, including the International Labour Organisation. They may also contribute to or receive financial assistance from these organisations.
These rights enable trade unions and employers’ organisations to operate effectively and represent their members’ interests both locally and internationally. This promotes a strong and democratic labour movement and fosters constructive engagement in labour relations.
